Development

At Wheatley Homes South, delivering quality, affordable new homes for our customers is a priority.

Our new-build programme will transform communities and help change tenants’ lives. A dozen new-build projects across Dumfries and Galloway will help deliver hundreds of new homes and help meet housing demand across the region.

It will see us deliver modern, high-quality, affordable and energy-efficient homes.

In 2024, families moved into the 89 homes that made up the new-build development at the former Curries Yard in Heathhall. That same month, families moved into 47 new homes at Ewart Place in Springholm.

Other new-build sites include: Newton Stewart, Dumfries, Stranraer and Johnstonebridge.

All our homes are built featuring low-carbon features including solar panels, energy-efficient heating and high levels of insulation.

Wheatley’s efforts will also see sites at Lochside, Annan and Summerhill transformed as part of community-led regenerations. Residents are currently having their say on what they want to see as part of the regenerations, from types of homes built to use of green space.

The local economy in Dumfries and Galloway has been boosted by more than £40 million thanks to the massive investment programme by Wheatley Homes South since 2019.

Our five-year programme

Ambitious plans are in place for a programme which will see hundreds of new homes built in communities across Dumfries and Galloway, which will help build better lives and better communities.

To help us move Wheatley Homes South's new-build programme forward, over the next five years we will:

  • review our existing stock; and
  • look to deliver, where possible, innovative refurbishment and regeneration projects which bring more homes to existing neighbourhoods.

Wheatley Homes South works in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Council and the Scottish Government to transform neighbourhoods across the region ranging from identifying opportunities for redevelopment to supporting efforts to ensure the homes we build are also environmentally-friendly.

We will also continue to progress sites which Wheatley Homes South already owns to deliver future phases of new homes as part of our commitment to providing essential housing in Dumfries and Galloway and look at further options for development of homes and community facilities in our communities.

Sustainability

Many tenants have already seen the difference our improvement plans can make to their homes and local area.

Our homes are not only great for tenants – they are environmentally-friendly too. We’re reducing the carbon footprint of our homes – and using the latest technologies to make homes cosier.

Doing our bit for the planet is also great news for tenants. By making our homes warmer, tenants won’t have to spend as much on their fuel bills.

Over the next five years we aim to:

  • improve energy and thermal efficiency standards of our homes including using renewable heat sources wherever possible and introducing smart meters to help with budgeting and energy use
  • reduce the number of tenants suffering from fuel poverty by offering fuel and debt advice.

Community benefits

Our new-build programme offers much more than just much-needed, energy-efficient homes.

The scale of our new-build programme will allow us to offer a number of training and apprenticeship opportunities for our customers and communities as well as create hundreds of new jobs across the region.

We are making Wheatley Homes South communities areas tenants are proud to call home. Our new ‘Community Benefit Model’ will see customers closely involved in making decisions around the community benefits they most want to see from our investment in existing homes and new-build housing projects.
